The Bossmen - Saginaw's Number one Garage Band
Lanny Roenicke (Bass Guitar, Vocals, Trumpet)

Saginaw rock Radio: WKNX, WSAM, and WTAC

The WKNX top 35 directory for 1965

WKNX, WSAM, WTAC, and WTRX

The three power stations in the Tri-city area that played the Bossmen's hits were: WKNX 1210 AM(advertised 10,000 watts - the most power station north of Detroit), WSAM 1400 AM (known as "Big Sam" where all the DJ's firstnames began with Sam or Sammy), WTAC 600 AM out of Flint (advertised as "Big 6 Good Guys"), and WTRX - Trix - 1330 AM - Number One

Hit Surveys

Each station published it's own hit survey for the fans: WKNX Powervoice 1210 BIG 10 Survey, Big SAM 1400 Super Sound Survey, WTAC Fab 40 List of Top Records. WTRX 1330 AM - Trix - who on December 9, 1966 listed the Bossmens hit "Baby Boy" at number two on their list.

DJ Sammy Major

We asked former DJ from WKNX and WSAM (Big Sam) what are the chances of a local band having a local radio station play their music today like the Bossmen and other Michigan Garage Bands did back in the sixties, and this is what he said:

Regional Hits

As far as the possibility of music today versus then there is no comparison. Today because of all the consultants, the larger radio ownership with group program directors make it as much as 50 times harder to make a regional hit outbreak No one wants to take a chance. Most of my time in the earlier years, like 67-88, I was in some position to determine what songs the station aired, and how often etc. There was less latitude in the later years. Then computerized music selection programs, consultants, etc, totally changed the face of radio. I did almost hour long interview for a tribute site here in Louisville last year. It has a lot of the insight of those days Gary Major Interview.

Bob Dyer and Dick Fabian held a 25th Y-A-Go-Go reunion at the Saginaw Y’s gymnasium that hosted The Bossmen, a band played there on many nights in the 60’s. The Bossmen were Saginaw’s Beatles from mid to late 60's. Led by Dick Wagner, the group issued 12 classic singles that were big hits in the Tri-Cities and got lots of airplay on WKNX.
